Mike Friedman reacted to a post in a topic: To HTTPS or not to HTTPS?

So I decided to bite the bullet and migrated a smaller money site about 2 months ago. Everything went well, so I took the plunge with my main money site 1 month ago. While I was adding SSL, I also got rid of the "www" and also changed the url for a chunk of pages to a new silo for better seo. I was/am on Amazon EC2 and was running apache/varnish/mysql and switched to nginx/php-fpm/rds. Figured if I was going to risk big changes why not go all in? Everything went fantastic. I noticed no drop off in traffic (so far...fingers still crossed and breath still being held) and many of my SERPs (a

The vast majority of the $150k per year is from Google traffic. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

I have a money site that I have had for a very long time. It does roughly $150k per year. Unfortunately, I am not running ssl on it and I am worried that my monetization is going to take a big hit due to Google's alarms about my site not being secure. I am considering switching to https, but I am really worried that I might take a significant hit in my search engine rankings. I've read about other site owners saying their rankings dropped a lot after switching or that sometimes it takes several months for their rankings to come back. So what do you all think? Is it worth the risk

Chrome will show red flag for non https sites

I can see how it would be important to implement https for conversions on a money site. Is there any reason to do it on network sites? -

Launch new site on EMD or as silo on non-EMD?
Vars replied to Vars's topic in Search Engine Optimization
This information is extremely helpful. I was leaning branded domain name and now I'm definitely going that route. Thanks Mike. -

Ever since I watched the private network course I have been building and promoting my content on silos. I am currently looking to launch a new e-commerce (ugh) site and have the option of using an EMD that I already own or using a branded domain and promoting a silo. Assuming all other domain metrics are equal, should I go with: hxxp://fastwidgets.com hxxp://fastwidgets.com/custom/ hxxp://fastwidgets.com/parts/ hxxp://fastwidgets.com/parts/wheels/ hxxp://fastwidgets.com/parts/tires/ or hxxp://mybrandname.com/fast-widgets/ hxxp://mybrandname.com/fast-widgets/custom/ hxxp:

I have an established site that ranks well and was wondering what you guys think about switching from HTTP to HTTPS? I know HTTPS is a ranking factor that has a benefit over HTTP, but I am curious as to how much of a ranking factor it might be. Specifically, I have a good number of pages (10-15 or so) that rank #2-#3 for the terms I am targeting. I also have a good number of pages (75 or so) that rank somewhere after #3, but still on the first page for the terms I am targeting. If switching to HTTPS bumps any of the #2 or #3s to #1 or any of the 1st pagers to the top 3 results the

Google has launched AMP coding of news articles: http://searchengineland.com/live-google-launches-amp-results-in-mobile-search-results-243147 Looks like it's just for news, but it looks like AMP enabled pages will appear in a "special carousel" in Google Search results so it might be a big deal for people that publish news articles. Some other highlights: - “An AMP page is four times faster and [uses] 10 times less data. It’s instantaneous,” Google’s senior news director Richard Gingras - Self-hosted WordPress blogs can get AMPed via a plug-in - The new coding discourag

I would totally pet one of those bear cubs as long as momma bear is far, far away.

If there weren't people walking around in the video I would say that it doesn't look real. Actually, it still doesn't look real...that's crazy.

Maybe cause it makes them look more futuristic/scientific. I could totally see women wearing that dress in a Back to the Future movie. Hmm...Mexican meteorologists don't seem to follow this rule...

Lol...guess we all have our bad days. I noticed the lack of outbound links to authority sites throughout his site as well. Maybe he's just trying to throw us off. Regardless, thanks for clearing that up for me.
-
No, outbound links aren't going to rank a page but a backlink page can trail a ranked page in the SERPs. What's the URL for the Bruce Clay comment? I read it on his page on silos: hxxp://www.bruceclay.com/seo/silo.htm "Links out to other websites are called outbound links and are the least understood link structure elements. Often, the drive to build inbound link campaigns dominates link structure projects while outbound linking remains ignored and misunderstood. Companies specifically express concern that they will likely lose traffic and customer sales if they link to re

Will putting an outbound link or two on my page to an authority site on the topic help me rank my page? I did not think too much of this until I read Bruce Clay's advice on doing it.

Man this photo just keeps getting better and better. I thought it was awesome to start with, but then I see the phone charger. After that I noticed the 1 penny in the Hindu and misspelled "Buddist" bowls. Then I imagine how challenging it must be to maintain the haircut and beard he has out on the streets. The kicker for me though was the top of another different cardboard sign in the bag next to him where you can just see "A Job". Clearly the dude has several different schemes he rotates through and this is just one of them. This guy would probably crush it as an IM.
