Google rolling out 4 new ad position metrics

Recommended Posts

The announcement is here

There is a good summary at Search Engine Land here.

This diagram is useful too.

Basically what it comes down to is instead of just giving us ad position we can now see how often our ads showed up above the organic results.

This is extremely useful because Google does not always show 3 ads above the organic results. You might see your ad showing an average position around #2, but a lower than expected CTR. This would cause most of us to think there is something wrong with the ad and try editing it.

However, position #2 above the organic results is one thing. What if you were just the second ad shown but were appearing below the organic results? In that case, you would expect the CTR on your ad to be lower and there might not be anything wrong with your ad. You'll end up pulling your hair out trying different ads and not knowing why you can't get your CTR up.

Kudos to Google for adding this.
