At least a third of the US ignores climate science. Half of the US doesn't know if the Sun revolves around the Earth, or the Earth revolves around the Sun. Half don't know it takes a year. 25% definitely believe the Sun goes around the Earth. Only 50% know that the Earth revolves around the Sun, the Moon revolves around the Earth, and it takes a year to go around the Sun. I'm talking about adults...who have the right to vote...not toddlers. Less than half of the adults in the US think evolution is a real thing. 2% of adults in the US think the Earth is flat. Aside from perhaps smirking a bit as he taxes the well off a bit more, everything else he represents has gone the way of the DODO. My friend was a Labor party member (Wimbledon) in the 80's, he allowed them to meet at his house. (I was living there paying rent) Quite Literally they were all going around calling each other Comrade They allowed these people who are still like this to participate in voting him in as leader. If the latest polling is anything to go by (yeah, I know), the SNP will hold more seats in parliament than any other. And yes, I fully understand why the majority of people in the north (well, those that actually got off their arses and voted) for Brexit on the referendum. Whether that translates into votes for Farage's mob at a general election is another matter. Whatever the outcome, for better or worse, the United Kingdom is never going to be the same. Anyway, Corbyn, Bernie Sanders, Trump, Farage and a host of others on both the left and right are all part of a growing trend towards nationalist populism sweeping the developed world as a backlash against the neo-liberal, globalist agenda. Globalism may well have lifted people out of poverty in 3rd world countries, but it's driven millions into poverty in developed countries (think the industrial wastelands of the north of England, the rust belt in America and so on). This so-called "middle ground" has failed the general population and benefited only the top end of town and the politicians themselves. Politicians act for and on behalf of whoever pays for their election campaigns. The interests of big money are never in the best interests of the general population. The privatisation of formerly state owned assets is one of the contributing factors, in the UK and here in Australia too. We were promised that private enterprise would deliver better service at a lower cost. The exact opposite has occurred. Costs continue to spiral upwards at the same time as service levels have gone in the opposite direction. While they were under state ownership these entities had the objective of providing the service(s) at a reasonable cost. If they actually lost money, that was acceptable, as long as the trains kept running, the lights were turned on, etc. Once privatised these assets had a completely different objective - to make money for their new owners, hence unprofitable arms of the business were shut down, and the costs were increased. If they didn't do this the businesses would've gone tits up and have to be bailed out by taxpayers, or re-nationalised at "market rates" (ie a lot more than the state got for selling them off in the first place). At the same time this was happening, the CEOs and executive class continued to award themselves outlandish salaries. It's passing strange how the workforce are told that their pay and conditions have to be slashed to provide them with the incentive to work harder. The executive class however argue that they need to be paid more to provide them with the incentive to work harder. Sometimes they state these things in the same sentence. Anyway, with all this going on it's easy to see why "leaders" on both the far left and the far right gain popularity with the masses. There are parallels throughout history with the times we're living in now. Think France in 1789. Russia in 1916/7. Germany in the 1920's. A whole lot of pain for the people, and in the case of Germany and Russia, the cure was actually worse than the ailment. We shall see what happens this time. To paraphrase the old Chinese proverb.
